Desalination with Solar

Desalination with Solar

Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis Desalination for Sustainable Irrigation Water

This sustainable irrigation water is produced by Reverse Osmosis (RO) desalination plants that are directly powered by on-site solar energy (photovoltaic systems).

Cabo Verde faces a dual challenge of water scarcity (no permanent rivers, declining groundwater) and high energy costs (due to reliance on imported fossil fuels). Desalination is essential but traditionally makes the cost of water prohibitive for agriculture.

By coupling RO desalination with solar power, this approach achieves two vital goals:

  1. Ensuring Water Supply: RO technology effectively converts seawater into the fresh water necessary for irrigation.
  2. Achieving Affordability: Utilizing solar power drastically reduces or eliminates the reliance on expensive, high-carbon diesel/HFO electricity to run the energy-intensive RO pumps. This makes the production of irrigation water cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.

The result is a resilient system that supports food security and agricultural development without further depleting scarce natural groundwater resources.

Securing Investments Through International Development Aid

These critically important and often costly investments—specifically in advanced renewable energy systems and energy-efficient desalination plants—are made possible through international development aid and partnerships. 🤝

Given the significant capital expenditure required to transition the national energy system and secure water supplies, financial support from international partners is essential to bridge the gap and enable Cabo Verde to implement large-scale, sustainable solutions. This aid ensures the long-term economic and environmental viability of these vital infrastructure projects.

Trust and Expertise in Development Partnerships

We maintain long-standing relationships with these international development organizations, and they confidently rely on our technical expertise to guide and implement complex infrastructure projects.

Our proven track record ensures that these development partners trust our ability to deliver sustainable, cost-efficient solutions for renewable energy and water management, which are crucial for Cabo Verde’s resilience and growth.
